Soundplay: the practice of collaborative sound-bathing and sound-play prioritizes engagement and pleasure in all sounds while removing restrictions that can be associated with classical music training. By responding to textures of sound using percussive and acoustic instruments and basic movements (including dropping instruments, instruments falling against each other) we can focus on the sound emitted. Through this practice, children are encouraged to explore not only their relationship with their body and an instrument, but also tune into the sounds that they like, prioritizing what is pleasing to their ears.
Possible benefits & risks of caregiver-child art therapy:
This program focuses on gentle forms of connection through shared soundplay and art-making. Connection within pairs will be invited through co-creating music and art; and group connection will be invited through collaborative soundplay and sharing reflections in a non-judgmental space.
Participants may experience
- energetic release
- meditative calm
- emotional expression
- new learnings about themselves, their caregiver/child, or their caregiver-child relationship as a whole
Art-making can bring up surprising or difficult emotions through the art-making process or conversations. As facilitators, we will do our best to:
- create a safe space for expression,
- structure the sessions to offer a sense of containment
- provide flexible invitations and smooth transitions, allowing space for unique needs and modifications – no one will be expected to do anything they do not want to do.
