I support young clients by offering a space where they have control and their knowledge is valued. This can help build relational safety and be especially supportive for children and teens, who often have little control over their circumstances.
With young clients, I work to:
- build a relationship that welcomes, but does not require, early disclosure of what’s going on for them – we may start getting to know each other by playing games, making art together, or talking about their favorite pasttimes, movies, music, tv shows, or video games;
- encourage them to take the lead in sessions – including art-making and what we discuss, while offering invitations (ex. movement, art directives, breathing exercises, questions) that they can accept or decline;
- learn about their communication styles and forms of expression that work uniquely for them to adjust my approach accordingly;
- ask questions to help us both understand how their words, experiences, perspetives, actions, and art connect to the feelings in their body;
- encourage play and creative experimentation to support their sense of connection, confidence, and well-being;
- maintain a non-judgmental and non-punitive stance.
